On May 10th we were staying with a friend in Carson City, Nevada and on our way to Reno to have dinner with her daughter. We got held up in traffic as we were getting ready to start across Washoe Valley (for those of you not familiar with the Reno area it is a beautiful valley between Reno and Carson City). There had been a shooting on the highway in the middle of the Valley!! You really had to wonder how a shooting could occurout here in the middle of nowhee! Luckily, our friend's son is a Patrol Commander and her son-in-law is a Patrol Sergeant for the City of Sparks so we found out by the time we got to Reno what had happened. A man shot (unfortunately it was fatal) another man and then took off running, discarding his clothes along the way knowing they would be trying to track him. The suspect was found, naked, crouched behind a sagebrush by the K-9 unit. Being NPD volunteers and so very proud of our own Eyan, we felt pretty good he was found although, truth be told, I think with only the cover of sagebrush the culprit would have been spotted fairly quickly by the officers. Kind of exciting for us old NPD Volunteers.
The next day we were treated to an extensive tour of the Sparks Police Department by Commander Brian Miller. Since we stood up for Brian's parents when they got married and have known him all his life, it is still a wonderment to us to see him all grown up and with such a responsible position - we were very proud. It was such an amazing event for us and so much more meaningful because we actually knew what he was talking about due to our NPD Volunteer training. Thanks, Brian.
