Several NPD volunteers and guests enjoyed an informative tour of the USCG Station. There was a video, a question/answer period, and tours of two Coast Guard boats. Our fearless leader, Al Poshusta was unable to attend due to a fall and serious injury but his beautiful wife, Sue, stopped by to deliver cookies and extend her regrets her and Al would not be able to join us due to Al's injury. We missed having them but did enjoy the cookies . . .

After the regular meeting of the Newport Police Department volunteers on September 14th, volunteer Wayne Hill showed the other volunteers the procedure in checking out a police vehicle. He started in the radio room; then the briefing room showing everyone where to sign out; we then went outside where he went through the vehicle showing everyone the controls and going over the radio procedure to Lincom. Wayne then asked Lee Fries to show the volunteers the Command Vehicle, #76.

The volunteers always appreciate these "hands on" demonstrations. It is good for the experienced volunteers to "brush up" on techniques and shows some of the newer recruits the proper way to do things. Thanks, Wayne.

The NPD Volunteers helped NPD and the Newport Recreation Department with a skateboard competition on Saturday, September 12th. It was a new experience for the volunteers and we all came away with a new appreciation for the skill and daring involved in this sport.

School Days - September 10, 2009

NPD Volunteers are off to help with traffic as the parents drop their children off for the first day of school. Wayne and Wayde are in one vehicle.

Lyle is taking the second vehicle.
JoAn and Candy are on hand to take the afternoon shift to watch traffic as the parents pick their children up from school. Chief Miranda thanks them for their hard work.

Several NPD volunteers spent a couple of hours on Wednesday cleaning traffic cones at the request of Sgt. Simpson. We spray washed and scrubbed the cones, let them dry, and then stenciled "NPD" on them.

We had a beautiful day and, other than the appearance of the garbage truck which momentarily put a stop to our work, finished the job with shiny orange cones. I think Sgt. Simpson would be proud!

NPD Volunteers were called out to help with traffic control at the Nye Beach Turnaround as everyone wanted a look at the commercial fishing boat on the beach on August 11th. We were there when they successfully pulled it out on Thursday, August 13, 2009.

Several NPD Volunteers toured transient camp areas after the regular Monday meeting to see where some transient camp areas are located and the procedure to report them.

The Newport Police Volunteers were on hand to help with Kid's Free Fishing Day. As you can see, several agencies were there to help making it truly a community event. Our own Nicole Mangum was on hand with her children, Mitchell and Jessie.

The Newport Police Department Volunteers had a booth at the Wal Mart Safety Fair on Friday, June 26th. We were one of several booths, including the Sheriff's Office who were there taking children's fingerprints for the parents. Things were a little slow until Officer T.J. Ericksen showed up with Eyon, then kids were coming from all over Wal Mart to see our new canine officer.

NEWPORT MARATHON

The Newport Marathon was held on May 30th. Here are a few photos taken from my vantage point of some of the NPD Volunteers and the race. Officer TJ Erickson spearheaded the event for us and did a great job!
On May 10th we were staying with a friend in Carson City, Nevada and on our way to Reno to have dinner with her daughter. We got held up in traffic as we were getting ready to start across Washoe Valley (for those of you not familiar with the Reno area it is a beautiful valley between Reno and Carson City). There had been a shooting on the highway in the middle of the Valley!! You really had to wonder how a shooting could occurout here in the middle of nowhee! Luckily, our friend's son is a Patrol Commander and her son-in-law is a Patrol Sergeant for the City of Sparks so we found out by the time we got to Reno what had happened. A man shot (unfortunately it was fatal) another man and then took off running, discarding his clothes along the way knowing they would be trying to track him. The suspect was found, naked, crouched behind a sagebrush by the K-9 unit. Being NPD volunteers and so very proud of our own Eyan, we felt pretty good he was found although, truth be told, I think with only the cover of sagebrush the culprit would have been spotted fairly quickly by the officers. Kind of exciting for us old NPD Volunteers.

The next day we were treated to an extensive tour of the Sparks Police Department by Commander Brian Miller. Since we stood up for Brian's parents when they got married and have known him all his life, it is still a wonderment to us to see him all grown up and with such a responsible position - we were very proud. It was such an amazing event for us and so much more meaningful because we actually knew what he was talking about due to our NPD Volunteer training. Thanks, Brian.

LOYALTY DAYS PARADE DAY

NPD volunteers started off the morning going over the plans for the Loyalty Days Parade and the briefing with all the officers. Several NPD volunteers received award for service in 2008 and Officer Kraig Mitchell received Officer of the Year award!

LOYALTY DAYS 2009

NPD Volunteers Candy Garrison, Wayde Dudley and Barbara Dudley joined the "March of 1000 Flags" on Thursday night, April 30th. We each collected our flags at the north end of the bridge and walked across to the south side. Candy, Wayde and I stopped in the middle of the bridge as as a Coast Guard helicopter went by and took a photo of all the people holding flags from one end of the bridge to the other! Wish I could have gotten a picture from down below as it must have been an amazing sight, but I wouldn't have wanted to miss the experience. At one point a vehicle went by driven by an elderly lady. Her passenger was a gentleman in his 90's, an oxygen tube in his nose, with his army hat on and sitting up as straight as he could and saluting all of us. There weren't many dry eyes after that!

I would love to see the view from below but know that I would not want to miss the chance to make this walk again. It was really something!!

City of Newport Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Thanks to the City of Newport for putting on such an enjoyable evening for all the volunteers. Several NPD volunteers were able to attend and enjoy the great food and great company at the Newport Aquarium. It is always nice to meet outside the NPD and out of uniforms and get a chance to know each other better. It is an added bonus to be appreciated in such a special way.

It was even nicer that several NPD volunteers won door prizes!

RAINBOW OVER NEWPORT

On the way to breakfast this morning about 7:30 am, Wayde and I were treated to this beautiful view of a rainbow over the ocean. What a great way to start the day!

December, 2008

On December 6th, the annual Shop With A Cop was held in the morning at Wal-Mart. The agencies involved were the Newport Police Department, Oregon State Police, Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, Lincoln City Police Department and Toledo Police Department. The Newport Police Volunteers helped with escorting the children and wrapping the presents. Seeing the joy on the faces of these children who are so much less fortunate than we are was well worth the time spent and brought home to all of us the true meaning of the Season.

edmontonsun.com - Edmonton News - Citizens help bag six graffiti vandals

edmontonsun.com - Edmonton News - Citizens help bag six graffiti vandals: "Six graffiti vandals have been caught tagging so far this year and each of them faces up to 12 mischief-related charges.

That's thanks in part to volunteer groups like the Community Police Radio Network, a group of about 60 volunteers who patrol the streets in their own personal vehicles to catch graffiti taggers - as well as others who commit crimes of mischief - and notify police before the culprits get away."

There was a Central Coast CERT meeting held at City Hall on Thursday, October 23rd. The meeting was open to the public and there was standing room only in the City Council Chambers. Members of the Newport Police Volunteers were also in attendance. The guest speakers were active duty personnel from both the Air and Surface operations components at North Bend and Newport, respectively. Lt. Jason Morgan from the North Bend Group and CWO Mark Allstott, Commander of the Newport Coast Guard Station, addressed the group on emergency procedures in rescue situations where they would be working with civilians. They presented a slide show and spoke briefly about their mission, their position in the United States and around the world, as well as Katrina-Rita, and Cascadia natural disaster response planning.

This meeting followed helicopter operations training on Saturday, October 18th, with the United States Coast Guard, Central Coast CERT and NPD Volunteers at the Newport Municipal Airport. Both events proved the vital importance of the USCG being able to rely upon trained civilian personnel in the event of an emergency.

Here are a few of the photos taken by Wayde Dudley on Saturday, October 18th at the Newport Airport. The USCG and Central Oregon Coast CERT had a practice drill in rescuing people with a helicopter. The NPD Volunteers assisted with checking volunteers in and out as well as helping with crowd control. There were about 40 people in attendance with several from Lincoln City. It was a very productive drill with valuable experience gained by all parties in working with each other.
