Auxiliary officer takes his job seriously | ShreveportTimes | The Times: "In the beginning, they patrolled neighborhoods as their primary duty, Dalton said, but eventually auxiliary officers took control over parking lot accidents and directing traffic when traffic signals go out or malfunction.

'We work nonviolent crimes so officers can be out on the street,' Dalton said. 'If a car breaks down, an officer doesn't need to sit with them.'

Most of the time, auxiliary officers ride in pairs, and the schedule can vary according to partners.

Of possible danger at stops, Dalton said it is a concern. 'We have to be real careful how we approach because there are some people who don't like parking tickets.'

But Dalton said he has been fortunate. In his 10 or 11 years, he has only had one person get ugly with him."
